The Body Asleep, The Mind Awake: A Data-Driven Look at Deep Meditation
Can we reliably induce the deep meditation “Yoga Nidra” state using sound? In a recent 45-minute trial using Muse EEG hardware, we observed a near-perfect inversion of traditional brainwave ratios – specifically a high-waking Delta state coupled with Theta/Beta synchronicity, suggesting a bridge between deep sleep and conscious awareness.
You’ve likely sat in silence, trying to quiet your thoughts, only to feel like your brain is a radio stuck between stations. I’ve been there. It’s frustrating to feel stuck in that mental loop when you’re looking for real rest or a deeper sense of awareness. I wanted to see if we could bridge that gap using something more than just “trying harder.” The experts at The Yoga Nidra Network teach many methods of attaining meditative states with ease.
We decided to test a specific audio protocol to see if it could reliably induce a state of Yoga Nidra, a state where your physical body is effectively asleep, but your conscious mind remains a clear observer. To keep us honest, we used a Muse EEG headband and the MindMonitor app to track what was actually happening inside the skull for 45 minutes.

The Data: Seeing the Shift to Deep Meditation
In our sessions, the data showed something I found remarkable. Typically, when you’re awake, your Alpha waves are prominent. When you’re in deep sleep, Delta takes over. In the chart below from our October 17th session, you can see a total inversion of these waves. The Alpha and Delta lines cross over and switch roles.
What’s even more interesting is the “coupling” of Theta and Beta waves. Usually, these two don’t hang out together much. But here, they moved in near-perfect synchronicity. While this was happening, the subject (me, in this case) felt completely detached from the physical body, yet I could describe every thought passing through my mind. I wasn’t dreaming; I was witnessing.

The “Trinaural” Protocol: Deep Meditation Reached By Science
We didn’t just use a standard background track. We built a sequence that follows the brain’s natural staircase. We started with Alpha frequencies to relax, stepped down into Theta for that “twilight” feel, and finally settled into a Delta base.
But the “secret sauce” was layering a Delta binaural beat with a Gamma isochronic tone. We call this “trinaural” entrainment. The EEG shifts we recorded aligned exactly with the timestamps when the audio changed phases. It wasn’t a coincidence; the brain was following the breadcrumbs we laid out. Deep meditation, on demand.
In the graph above, you can see the Gamma spikes. Some of these actually went outside the standard range of the Muse hardware, occurring right when the subject reported the deepest sense of “attainment.”

Physical Stillness and Heart Rate Show Deep Meditative State
To prove the body was actually “asleep,” we monitored the accelerometer and gyroscope. If you look at the movement data, it’s a flat line. There was zero tossing or turning. My body was a lead weight on the chair, but my internal world was vibrant.
My heart rate also showed a steady, grounded rhythm. It wasn’t the erratic spike of a dream state, but the calm, low-variability hum of deep physiological recovery.
How You Can Apply This
I’m sharing this because I want you to know that deep meditation states aren’t just for people who spend decades in a cave. You can use the tools available right now to check your own progress. If you want to try this yourself, here is the basic approach:
- Get a Baseline: Use a consumer EEG like the Muse to see where you start. Don’t guess.
- Sequence Your Audio: Don’t just jump into deep meditation. Walk your brain down the stairs from Alpha (10Hz) to Theta (6Hz) to Delta (2Hz).
- Test the Layering: Try adding a 40Hz Gamma pulse over a 2Hz Delta beat. It sounds like a low hum with a fast “flicker.”
- Review Your CSVs: Look for that Alpha/Delta inversion. When those lines cross, you’ve hit the sweet spot.
It won’t happen the first time for everyone. It took us multiple conditioning sessions to get these two subjects to respond this reliably. But the power to change your present state is literally in your hands. You aren’t stuck with the “monkey mind” you woke up with today. With a little data and the right protocol, you can find the doorway to a much deeper version of yourself.
I’m happy to share the raw .csv files if you want to dig into the micro-voltages yourself. The more we look at this together, the faster we can all figure out how to navigate our own consciousness.
You hold the tools to reprogram your rest. Why not start tonight?
